Staying Fit – On Vacay

November 15, 2013|Posted in: Health, Running, Workouts

With the holidays coming up I am sure a lot of you are planning vacations.  Or maybe you are already thinking about the vacation you are going to take in the spring.  I know I am!  The hubby and I plan to jet off to Cancun in January sometime.

While I am super excited for some time to relax, lounge, and lay by the pool, that doesn’t mean I will refrain from working out.  Working out makes me feel great so why would I not do that on vacation?

I realize some people might think I’m completely crazy saying this but yes, I believe you should STILL workout while you are on vacation.  Now, after reading that sentence you probably think I am some sort of insanely boring person to travel with.  But I promise I’m not!  I just believe in continuing a healthy lifestyle wherever you are because health is so important.  And it can be really fun.

I also want to give you examples of ways that you can include fitness in your lifestyle.  Sometimes without even realizing it.

Have you ever realized how much you can see when you run?  If you go out for just a few miles even (walking, running, biking), you can see so much more of a place.  You can make stops easily along the way and really take in a city or scenery wherever you are.

The benefits of still maintaining physical activity while on vacation are huge.  When you are on vacation, you are more likely to eat and drink more than you normally would so you take in extra calories.  By staying physically active, you can help avoid coming back from vacation with extra pounds on the scale.  I promise that if you exercise while you are on vacation, you will still enjoy your vacation.

Here are some ideas of things you can do while on vacation:

  • Sign up for a fun race
  • Just run for fun through a city or on the beach
  • Go hiking if you are near some mountains (bring along your camera!)
  • Swim some laps in the pool to cool off
  • Go skiing if it’s during winter
  • A long bike ride
  • Some hotels that I have been at offer classes like yoga in the morning
  • Use your hotel gym
  • Save some money on cabs and buses – just walk everywhere while sight-seeing
  • Go outside and throw a football back and forth
  • Play volleyball on the beach

These are some great things to get you started thinking about what you can do to stay active.  Exercising on vacation doesn’t have to be a chore and something you have to force yourself NOT to do just because you are on vacation.  You should jump into it and use it as a way to get more out of your vacation!  Stay healthy so you can continue to take these types of trips for years to come!

I want to encourage you to follow along in my health journey through what I learn and experience. I hope there is something you can take away from Fit Busy Female that inspires you to start taking control of your health and feeling better every day.
