Top 5 Favorite Places to Sweat in Chicago
I’ve been missing Chicago quite a bit lately so it’s been on my mind. Summer time was always the best there so since that fabulous time in Chicago is here I’m getting a little bummed I’m not there.
While I’ve been daydreaming of runs on the lakefront I thought that maybe I should do a roundup of my favorite places to work out in the Windy City! I’ve been to many gyms and run almost all over Chicago so I feel I have some pretty good knowledge when it comes to this stuff.
Here are a few of my favorite places to break a sweat:
• CrossTown Fitness
This gym made me realize that as fit as I thought I was, I still had some work to do. They whipped me into shape! Their classes are about an hour and they are high intensity interval training classes. The trainers there though are some of the best. Every time I went to a class I didn’t know what to expect. But I was excited for them to kick my butt. They have classes all throughout the day and even a 5 am class that I went to frequently. It also wasn’t a snobby gym (yes, they exist and I’ve seen one too many) so I felt comfortable there. I was actually working out there when I found out I was pregnant and one of my favorite trainers, Dawn, was great about it and made me feel comfortable working out (and keeping my secret!). BONUS: They have childcare!
I tried Shred using my ClassPass membership I had and it was super fun. The first class was a bit of a shock to my system but I was hooked. You know a little more of what to expect here because of the way the class runs. Each class is an hour and you start on the floor or on the treadmill. Every 15 minutes you switch. I always started on the treadmill and had to learn quickly not to use all my energy in that first 15 minutes or I wasn’t going to make it until the end. I liked that they kept the room kind of dark and blasted the music. You kind of felt like you were in your own little sweaty world. BONUS again: Childcare!
• PureBarre Lincoln Park
This class really challenged me and it’s harder than it looks. I really liked the instructor when I tried out this studio and although I was new to the barre scene I didn’t feel as awkward as I thought I would. I also had a great workout and left there a little wobbly (in a good way!). The location of this studio is great in my opinion too.
• Chicago Athletic Clubs
For most of my time in Chicago, I belonged to the Lakeview Athletic Club and then the West Loop Athletic Club. I really loved both. I felt that the facilities were clean, the classes were pretty good, and that the equipment was in good shape. The hours worked great for me (they open at 5 am!) and the location of both were perfect based on where I lived. And once again, big BONUS: Childcare!
• The Lakefront
I always tell my husband that no matter where I go for a run, nothing holds a candle to running on the lakefront path in Chicago. It just doesn’t. The views of the city along with Lake Michigan are impossible to find anywhere else. I spent many long runs out there (hello Chicago Marathon training) and can honestly say I enjoyed it every time I was out there.
If you live in Chicago right now, please take advantage of these places since I can’t! And if you ever visit Chicago, make sure to check them out too. Your waist line will thank you.
I want to encourage you to follow along in my health journey through what I learn and experience. I hope there is something you can take away from Fit Busy Female that inspires you to start taking control of your health and feeling better every day.
