Workout Options for Moms!

August 27, 2014|Posted in: Health, Workouts

I know a big dilemma with being a mom (or busy person in general) is figuring out how to get in a workout.  Now you have another person to take care of that is completely dependent on you.  But Mom still needs her time to get in some exercise!

How do we find the time to do this?  I have 4 different options for new moms that might help them get in a workout – and maintain some sort of sanity.  I have tried them all as well so this is coming from experience!

  1. Workout videos – these are great because you don’t have to actually leave the house in order to do them.  I am a fan of Insanity and P90X (I don’t sell Beachbody products FYI) because I think they are effective.  I have also heard Jillian Michaels has some great ones as well.  You can squeeze these in during naptime or at night when baby is in bed.
  2. Go early in the morning – I have actually gotten up to go to the gym around 6 before my husband leaves for work.  (Wait, gotten up?  Who am I kidding?  I was already up way before 6.)  This way though, he can give our daughter a bottle if she needs it or comfort her and I get my workout in before the day officially starts.  It’s hard to make yourself do this but it does start the day off with a boost of energy if you believe it.
  3. Gym daycare – My gym has a daycare and of course it’s an extra expense but its better than me going crazy cooped up in the house all day.  I usually feed my daughter, put her in the stroller, and walk to the gym.  By the time we get there, she is asleep and she naps in the daycare while some lovely ladies watch her.  I get my workout in and we walk home.  It actually works great!
  4. Stroller Strides – I did this the other day with a friend and it was a lot of fun!  It was great to be around other moms and you get to bring your baby with you!  So he or she is right there with Mom, safe and sound.  It’s an hour workout and then afterwards some of the kids play together.  It’s a great way to get in a workout during the day.

So which of these would be right for you?

For the working mom, I think option 1 and/or 2 would probably be best.  You either get to work out early in the morning before work (and hopefully while the little one is still sleeping if you’re lucky) then go about your day.  Or you don’t even leave the house and pop in a DVD in the morning or at night.

For the mom trying to save money?  I would say option 2 is going to be your best bet.  It either requires a gym membership which you can usually find affordable ones or you can go for a run outside (in daylight – be safe please!).  Option 1 would probably work as well but some workout DVD’s can cost quite a bit of money so beware.

For the mom who needs some motivation and is craving some adult interaction?  Stroller Strides for sure!  This provides both of that.  You are motivated because the other women around you are doing the workout, you have an instructor, and you get to mingle with some other moms.  The social interaction definitely helps, I know!

For the mom who wants more of a tough workout?  If you’re motivated to do it on your own then option 3 is best.  I can get in a really good workout at the gym while my daughter is in the daycare.  I don’t want her to be there too long so I just go really hard during my workout.  It’s nice to jump on the treadmill, sprint it out, then go pick up my daughter.

Hopefully one of these works for you if you are a mom looking to get in a workout.  It’s important to watch your health as well as the health of your family.  A happy Mom makes for a happy family.  You can always do other things like go on walks, play with your kids at the park, or go for a quick run if someone is willing to watch your child.

If you are really craving a workout, give one of these a try!

I want to encourage you to follow along in my health journey through what I learn and experience. I hope there is something you can take away from Fit Busy Female that inspires you to start taking control of your health and feeling better every day.
